Friends of the M-Path

The M-Path is a paved multi-use trail in urban Miami-Dade County, which was opened in 1983 and is part of the Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) system. The trail follows an MDT right-of-way under the elevated Metrorail guideway.

The M-Path is one of Florida’s oldest rail trails, built atop a portion of the fabled Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) and crosses more than two-dozen railroad crossings.  The M-Path generally follows US 1 (South Dixie Highway) and connects  eight Metrorail stations.  A one-mile trail extension was completed in 2012 to connect to the South Dade Trail that runs along the South Miami-Dade Busway to Florida City. The 30-mile long South Dade Trail/M-Path system will be one of the longest non-motorized trail facilities in Florida. It will also be a key component of the larger East Coast Greenway trail extending from Key West to Canada (http://www.miamidade.gov/mpo/docs/MPO_mpath_master_final_200707.pdf).

Urban Health Partnership’s role in facilitating the creation of a “friends group” for the M-Path will raise awareness and use of the M-Path, and promote trails and physical activity in general. This “friends group” is made possible by the Rails to Trails Conservancy. The goal of the development of an M-Path Friends Group is to ultimately build a social structure that could lead to greater public and private support, programmed and informal activities, and additional capital improvements.   Phase 1 (October 2012 to September 2013) of the project would focus on the existing  ten mile trail from SW 1st Ave & Miami River (Downtown Miami) and US 1 at Datran Blvd (Kendall).
