Despite extensive public interest in the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), there are an amazing number of people who don’t understand it and the health care ruling. Forty-five percent of respondents in a Pew Research Center poll either didn’t know what the court had done in regard the health care law (30 percent) or thought that the court had rejected most of the provisions of the law (15 percent). Just 55% of the public knows that the court upheld most of the health care law’s provision.

Getting the correct facts out to people on the law’s benefits builds a strong and healthier nation. A shining example of this is right here in Florida. Nearly 2.6 million seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare have received free, lifesaving preventive services since the passage of the ACA and have saved over $141 million on their prescription drugs. If the law is fully implemented, over 2.5 million uninsured Floridians will gain insurance coverage by 2019.

The Affordable Care Act enables individuals to enroll in health insurance exchanges and receive affordable health insurance beginning in the fall of 2013. To make those purchases easier, the plans have to meet minimum standards and explain their coverage in plain language.

Keeping the conversation simple will also benefit businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees. Many don’t know that since they’re not required to offer coverage, they won’t face fines. But, they can receive tax credits if they decide to offer coverage. Small businesses, who often pay as much as 18% more than larger companies will have a more level playing field. Health insurance exchanges will be created for small businesses, with the idea being they can comparison shop for plans.

And here’s another idea. Let’s all make it our business to let fellow Floridians know about the many benefits provided by the Affordable Care Act. Click on www.healthcare.gov and feel the power that comes with knowledge… and good health.
